{"id":1754,"date":"2014-08-04T20:44:55","date_gmt":"2014-08-04T20:44:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ctcps.org\/blog\/?p=1754"},"modified":"2014-08-04T20:44:55","modified_gmt":"2014-08-04T20:44:55","slug":"courage-to-bring-change","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.ctcps.org\/?p=1754","title":{"rendered":"Courage to Bring Change"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.ctcps.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/RFK-at-Arlington.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1755 aligncenter\" alt=\"RFK at Arlington\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.ctcps.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/RFK-at-Arlington-300x168.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.ctcps.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/RFK-at-Arlington-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.ctcps.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/RFK-at-Arlington.jpg 818w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The other day, I visited Arlington National Cemetery.\u00a0 There are rows and rows of white tombstones, 400,000 graves in all.\u00a0 It\u2019s daunting. \u00a0From atop the hill at Arlington House, in almost every direction, the endless rows of white can be seen.<\/p>\n<p>Each year 440,000 Americans needlessly die as a result of medical harm.\u00a0 They could fill an Arlington National Cemetery &#8211; every year!\u00a0\u00a0 They did not sign on to do something with the understanding that medical harm was an accepted risk.<\/p>\n<p>We can honor them by working together to change this, and many of us are.\u00a0 We should think about the words of Robert Kennedy, found on the wall of his memorial at Arlington.\u00a0\u00a0 Although they were spoken almost 50 years ago, well before the patient safety movement took shape, we can think of them in terms of patient safety and use them as inspiration as we go forward and engage in conversations and actions to end the needless deaths that result from medical harm.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;It is from numberless diverse acts of courage and belief that human history is shaped each time a man stands up for an ideal or acts to improve the lot of others or strikes out against injustice he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring those ripples build a current that can sweep down the mightiest wall of oppression and resistance.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Robert F.
